State Theatre New Jersey

Autism-friendly Relaxed performances for schools

State Theatre New Jersey’s Autism-Friendly Relaxed Performances allow students on the autism spectrum or with other sensory sensitivities to enjoy high-quality live entertainment in a safe, welcoming, sensory-friendly environment.

At an Autism-Friendly Relaxed Performance you will find:

  • Lighting and sound levels that are modulated to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • A judgment-free environment, with a relaxed attitude toward noise and moving around during the show.
  • A calming area with soft seating, fidget toys, and activities.
  • Ushers and volunteers who have been specially trained to assist you.
  • A social story, provided in advance, to help you prepare your students for your trip to the theater.

Please note: the May 1 performance of Rainbow Fish, and both May 9 performances of The Man Who Planted Trees are Autism-Friendly Relaxed Performances.
