State Theatre New Jersey is proud to be part of new theater project, Play at Home. The project is a collaboration between theaters from across the country as a response to the rapidly changing landscape of the performing arts during this global crisis. The initiative's mission is simple: to continue to inspire joy and creativity through live theater.
As a part of this collaboration, the State Theatre has micro-commissioned playwrights/creators to write a short play or musical (10 minutes or less) which are now available for free download.
All plays are intended for families or small groups of people to perform together at home. We hope that you and your family will pick a play to produce from your living rooms and if you feel so inclined, share it with us at #PlayAtHomePlays.

Many words that we use in modern English were actually first recorded in the works of William Shakespeare! Experts estimate that approximately 422 words that we use today were completely original words coined by the Bard. Some surprising ones include addiction, bloodsucking, control, mimic, and reclusive, just to name a few.
The ancient Greeks showed their admiration for a show by doing everything other then clapping their hands. They would stamp their feet and shout to show praise for a production. Ancient Greeks enjoyed invoking as much loud noise as humanly possible when satisfied with a performance. Some even believe that clapping hands together was originated in ancient Greek theatre!
The origin of the word "explode" actually comes from the world of theatre! It was first used in the 1530s as the Latin word "explodere," which meant "to boo an actor off the stage." It comes from the roots "ex-," meaning "out," and "plaudere," which means "to clap." ("plaudere" is also the root of the words "applaud" and "applause!") When "explodere" was adopted into the English language in the 1650s, it came to mean "to drive out with violence and sudden noise," and over time, it started to resemble the word "explode" as we know it today, defined as "to burst forth with sudden violence or noise from internal energy." While rows A-H and J-Z are typically present in a theater, you will almost certainly never see a row I. After people would flock to the front row confusing their row ‘I’ tickets for row ‘1,’ the row was taken off completely to avoid confusion. (Some theaters omit rows O and Q as well!)
