Mary Chapin Carpenter Releases New Album
Posted on 05/16/2016
Five time Grammy® winner and two-time Female Vocalist of the Year Mary Chapin Carpenter will be coming to The State on June 15! After the recent release of Things That We Are Made Of, you can expect an evening of Carpenter’s old and new hits.
Music entered Mary Chapin Carpenter’s life early on after receiving a guitar as a child, which she played as a hobby throughout her years at school. She spent her free time throughout the day strumming her guitar around school until her classmates threatened to cut her guitar strings. These threats instilled a minor fear in public performance, which prevented her from performing for several years. It wasn’t until her father encouraged her to perform at an open mic-night in Cleveland Park that reminded Carpenter how much she missed performing.
Mary pursed a Bachelor’s Degree in American Civilization at Brown University, and continued to perform in her free time over the summers throughout DC. She met multi-instrumentalist and producer John Jennings after one of her performances, and shortly thereafter started working him. This relationship helped Mary establish herself as a pop and contemporary performer in the Washington DC folk scene, and it was John Jennings who convinced Mary to perform original music. Her very first tape was the byproduct of collaborative demos with John Jennings which led to an audition with Columbia Records.
Carpenter’s albums include Hometown Girl, A Place in The World, Time*Sex*Love, State of the Heart, Shooting Straight in the Dark, and Come On Come On. The success of her Come On Come On album led to Carpenter working with several artists, including Joan Baez, Tony Rice, Cyndi Lauper, Trisha Yearwood, Dolly Parton, and Shawn Colvin.
Join us on June 15th at State Theatre New Jersey for an evening with New Jersey native, and successful American singer, songwriter, musician Mary Chapin Carpenter!
