Broadway is Bigger and Better Than Ever at The State!
Posted on 09/15/2016
With five fantastic shows (including three State Theatre debuts!) and 21 performances over the course of the season, we have more Broadway for you than ever before at State Theatre New Jersey!
I am happy to announce that we are kicking off the season with the Equity tour of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage. All you Dirty Dancing fans out there will want to snag the opportunity to see this record-breaking international sensation before it moves to Broadway. The show features the hit songs you know from the movie including “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?,” and of course, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” London’s Sunday Express says, “This crowd-pleasing stage adaptation hits the jackpot!” Check out this short teaser video for the show.
Next up, on December 2-4, we have ELF The Musical lighting up our stage just in time for the holiday season! Based on the 2003 New Line Cinema hit, watch Buddy the Elf come to life on stage in this equity tour that follows him from the North Pole to New York City. Variety proclaims, “ELF is happy enough for families, savvy enough for city kids and plenty smart for adults!” Join us for this modern day Christmas classic and as the song title suggests, you will be sure to feel “Sparklejollytwinklejingly!”
It wouldn't be a Broadway season without a Broadway classic. This March we have “Magic to Do” as Pippin swings, flips, and fosse’s its way onto our stage. This Tony®-Award winning Best Musical Revival takes the classic music from Oscar® and Grammy®-winner Stephen Schwartz (you may know him for Wicked and Godspell) and places it under the big top, with acrobats adding to the spectacle, performing knife throwing, hula-hooping, and gravity-defying balancing acts.
In May we can give you 525,600 reasons to come see RENT’s 20th Anniversary Tour. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony®-Award winning show by little-known composer Jonathon Larson opened on Broadway in 1996, forever changing the landscape of American theatre. This unforgettable story follows seven artists in New York City struggling to follow their dreams and their hearts without selling out. Featuring memorable songs such as “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Boheme,” and “No Day But Today.” Enjoy this video clip showcasing the upcoming tour.
Rounding out our season we have Hedwig and the Angry Inch, fresh off the 2014 Tony® award production for best revival of a musical! This musical is nothing short of “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). Written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask and directed by Tony®-Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), Time Magazine proclaims this production is “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever!” Check out this video of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask talking about the making of Hedwig.
I am so proud of this Broadway season and I hope you join us as we bring Broadway right to you in your own backyard!
