American Repertory Ballet brings Nutcracker to the stage with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, stunning new sets, thrilling choreography, and a cast of more than 100 performers. Experience the magic of this beloved holiday classic from December 16-18, 2016 at State Theatre New Jersey!
A holiday tradition for more than 50 years, American Repertory Ballet’s is one of the longest continuously running Nutcracker productions in the nation. Directed by Artistic Director Douglas Martin, ARB’s professional company will be joined by select students from Princeton Ballet School to tell the story of a young girl named Clara and how a mysterious gift—a Nutcracker—from her Uncle Drosselmeyer brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes.
Throughout the rest of the ballet Clara is immersed in a dreamlike state, in which she helps her come-to-life Nutcracker to defeat the fierce Mouse King, and goes on to enter the Land of the Snow and the Land of the Sweets with the Nutcracker, who has now transformed into a handsome prince. Clara and her prince enter an enchanted forest wonderland where they are welcomed by dancing snowflakes and fairies, performing all new and exciting choreography by Artistic Director Douglas Martin and Resident Choreographer Mary Barton. The Sugar Plum Fairy expertly presents one of the most technically challenging dances in the entire ballet to that familiar, crystalline Tchaikovsky melody; her character a symbol of seasonal splendor and hope, and a role that many young ballerinas-to-be aspire to.
“We want our audience to see their family traditions come alive on stage, were every little girl dreams of herself as Clara exploring these fantasy lands and every boy envisions battling the Rat King as the Nutcracker Prince,” said Martin, describing the timeless charm that makes the Nutcracker so special. “It's wonderful to see new generations of children experience this magical performance for the first time and just as thrilling to see audiences return yearly for this most American of holiday treats.”
During this busy holiday season, you shouldn't pass up the chance to share the Nutcracker experience with the ones you love. Take your family over to State Theatre New Jersey and bring holidays to life with American Repertory Ballet’s production of Nutcracker from December 16-18!
