Family Day was a Wild Ride at State Theatre New Jersey!

Where can you run into a pair of Minions walking down the street, get up-close and personal with an armadillo inside a church, climb aboard a fire truck, build your very own rocket ship, and bang on a drum along with 100 other enthusiastic percussionists—all in one day? At State Theatre New Jersey’s Family Day, of course! On February 20, more than 4,500 people flocked to the 11th edition of this annual Presidents Day celebration. With a full day of activities spanning three venues, downtown New Brunswick was alive with the sights and sounds of kids and their families having a great time.
Along with performances of Lightwire Theater’s delightful Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey at the State Theatre, there were performances at Crossroads Theatre by children’s rock icon mr. Ray and by the nimble-footed New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble, plus a ground-shaking community drum circle. Across the street at the United Methodist Church, the Philadelphia Zoo returned with their wildly popular “Who’s Who at the Zoo.” Kids had hands-on fun with crafts, games, dance and theater workshops, a photo booth, and the New Brunswick Fire Department’s gleaming red engine. Among the other delights were balloon animals, face painting, an ice sculpting demonstration, and costumed characters (including the aforementioned Minions, along with Elmo and Olaf).
If you think Family Day couldn’t possibly get any better, well, think again. Nearly all of these amazing activities were free of charge, thanks in part to the generous sponsorship of Horizon Foundation for New Jersey with additional support by Investors Bank.
“On behalf of everyone at Horizon, we congratulate the State Theatre on another successful Family Day,” said Executive Director Jonathan Pearson of The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. “The State Theatre does great work in the local community and we proudly support their mission of providing accessible and affordable arts programs to people of all ages and backgrounds.”
Family Day is one of State Theatre New Jersey’s many Education and Outreach initiatives. Our programs—most of them free—annually reach more than 30,000 students and adults, including many who have little or no access to quality performing arts. These programs reflect the Theatre’s deep commitment to our rich and diverse New Jersey community.
