Q&A with Jessica Trechak, our Director of Event Services
Posted on 06/02/2017
Jessica Trechak has called State Theatre New Jersey her home for over 10 years! If you have been to a show at The State you have probably seen her around; she's the one that makes sure all of our events happen smoothly! As one of the people on the front lines, she has seen plenty over her time here and we sat down to chat with her and learn more about her hands-on position in our organization.
How long have you been working at State Theatre New Jersey? What made you decide to join the team?
This is my 14th year. Having a life-time love of theater, a position opened up and I was fortunate to be chosen to join the team.
How would you explain your job to someone who had no involvement in theater and the arts?
As Director of Event Services I am responsible for every aspect of the customer experience from the front doors to the front of the stage. I hire and train ushers, security and police officers, organizing everything across show dates, times, and schedules. It is essential to plan and coordinate with all departments for every upcoming event to ensure that all show related needs are met. This includes but is not limited to meet & greets, private parties, artist merchandise, ticketing, VIP’s, and more. As well as that I have to always be prepared for the unexpected such as seating issues, change in show schedules, ticketing problems, late seating, medical concerns, etc. It is extremely rewarding to know that we serve more than 200,000 guests each year and help to create positive and memorable experiences that will last a life time.
Did you always plan on having a job in theater and the arts? What did you go to school for?
I went to school for early childhood education. However upon graduation I knew I did not want to follow in that path. I began to explore other options and eventually found my direction.
I know that you are a bit of a performer yourself, when did you first become interested in theater?
I have loved the theater for as long as I can remember (musicals continue to be my favorite). There is nothing like live theater, the experience of being in the presence of the performer, the magic, and the uniqueness of each individual performance.
What are some fun memorable roles you've had the opportunity to play?
I have played supporting leads, dancers, and character roles but the show that remains special is Anything Goes when my now husband (who was also in the show) proposed to me during our bows.
What are some of your most memorable moments about working here? Any fun stories?
Presenting iconic artists such as: Harry Connick, Jr., Ringo Starr, John Stamos, Crosby Stills & Nash, and Liza Minnelli. Deana Martin asked for the entire Front of House staff to join her on stage in singing two of her songs.
What are you looking forward to the most in our upcoming season?
Our fantastic Broadway line up!
