This theater was built on promoting children's learning and growth

Since the Early 1970’s, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has wowed audiences young and old with their puppetry and playful storytelling. With a mission statement that includes promoting literacy, creative self-expression, and youth growth, State Theatre New Jersey is proud to work with them and house their performance of Guess How Much I Love You & I Love My Little Storybook.
In 1972, Evelyn Garbary, Tom Miller, and Sara Lee Lewis teamed up and founded the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Soctia in Canada. The theater was built on the ideas of promoting children’s learning and growth. They advocate for this cause several ways; through the use of puppetry, Mermaid Theatre performs various children's stories such as The Rainbow Fish, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Guess How Much I Love You and many more. By using children’s stories, the theater hopes that it will encourage the youth to want to read the performed book and later branch out to other stories.
Another way Mermaid Theatre promotes children’s learning and growth is through their “Youtheatre” program. Started in 1990, this subsection of the larger Mermaid Theatre seeks out the teenage/adolescent youth to discuss subject matters relatable to them through the use of regular theater. Topics which the Youtheatre dives into include bullying, racism, substance abuse, and dealing with ADHD.
At State Theatre New Jersey Mermaid Theatre will be performing Guess How Much I Love You and I Love My Little Storybook. Guess How Much I Love You revolves around two rabbits, a father and a son, who attempt to measure how much they love each other. I Love My Little Storybook is about a little bunny whose book comes to life as he is reading it.
State Theatre New Jersey is not just a performing arts theater, it is also a cultural center where children have the opportunity to come together and learn, just as the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia wanted. Now you have the chance to see the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia! Don’t miss their shows: Guess How Much I Love You and I Love My Little Storybook at the State Theatre New Jersey on Sun, October 22, 2017 at 1pm & 4pm an afternoon that is sure to captivate audiences of all ages.
