Love Paris? Head on over to State Theatre New Jersey on November 26 for a screening of the beloved  film An American in Paris and fall in love with Paris all over again! This isn’t your typical film screening, it is also a concert! Watch An American in Paris on the big screen while the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) plays the score live!

An American in Paris features big name actors including Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. While Kelly was already a star by the release of this movie, Caron was relatively unknown. In fact, it was Kelly who discovered Caron while vacationing in Paris.

At 17, Caron was a ballerina in the famous Roland Petit’s ballet company, Ballet des Champs Elysées. Kelly happened to see her perform one day and casted her to appear alongside him in the musical. At 18, Caron, Parisian born and still grappling with the aftereffects of World War II, entered the lavish world of Hollywood and quickly became a star signing a contract with MGM. Throughout her career, Caron has repeatedly mentioned what a shock it was leaving Paris and moving to Hollywood. Due to World War II, Caron suffered from malnutrition which affected her during her rigorous work schedule during the filming of An American in Paris. However, while Hollywood was drastically different from what she was used to in France, moving there completely changed her life. Her talent led her to be featured in musicals such as The Glass Slipper, Lili, and Gigi. Her performances have nominated her for Academy Awards® and won her a BAFTA and Golden Globe®. She went on to dance with stars such as the legendary dancer, actor, and singer Fred Astaire in Daddy Long Legs and renowned Soviet and American dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov who appeared in White Nights, in 1988 at a gala for the Paris Opera Ballet . Caron became an absolute star in a short span of time.

Come join State Theatre New Jersey November 26, 2017 at 3pm to enjoy Leslie Caron’s first feature! Experience An American in Paris on the big screen while getting to listen to the score performed live by the NJSO! It is going to be a captivating experience and you will be sure to feel like you are right there in Paris alongside Kelly and Caron!
