Celebrating Pride Month with George Takei
Posted on 06/04/2019
In 2016, the State Theatre made strides towards its core commitment to diversity and inclusion with the creation of three community engagement committees comprised of dedicated community leaders. The three committees include the African American, Latino, and the LGBTQ committee.
As we celebrate Pride month this June, the LGBTQ committee is excited to share its first ever Pride month event with a presentation by LGBTQ activist, actor, and trailblazer George Takei. Takei ( featured right on this month's cover of Out in Jersey) has had an amazing career and life and he will share his story with a lecture and audience Q&A on June 20 at The State. And oh what a story it is. From his family's forced internment as Japanese Americans during WWII, the story told in his recent Broadway run in Allegiance, the musical that was inspired by this true-life experience (also featuring Tony®-winner Lea Salonga) to his rise to celebrity as a Sci-fi icon on Star Trek as Mr. Sulu, his remarkable journey as a social media mega power (Oh Myyy!), and his passionate fight for LGBTQ rights and marriage equality in America, Takei has led a life full life with ups and downs, stops and starts.
Before Takei takes the stage, the LGBTQ committee is hosting a Pride Night Party. Featuring Drag Queen Host Pissi Myles (pictured above), the party kicks off at 6:30pm in the State Theatre's new Studio space. The party includes a live band, performances by Pissi Myles, food from popular New Brunswick Latin restaurant Esquina Latina, and some fabulous giveaways! Giveaways include tickets to State Theatre's 2019-20 Broadway show Beautiful - The Carole King Musical and post-show Pride Party with the Cast; a restaurant gift certificate to Fiddleheads in Jamesburg; a gift basket from Johnson & Johnson; a free wedding officiant and free use of the sanctuary for a wedding at Christ Church in New Brunswick; and a United MileagePlus Premier Gold package (worth over $4,000!) . (Phew! That's a lot!) Tickets for the party are just $10 (must purchase a ticket to George Takei to order a Pride Party ticket).
We hope that you can join the LGBTQ Committee for our first Pride Month event ever! Happy Pride 2019!
