Outside Summertime Family Fun

For many, it’s been a challenge this summer to find activities to keep the kids entertained that the whole family can get involved. If you’re a parent, you may be more than used to the recurring burning question from your children: what are we going to do today? Although many attractions are still closed, you can have fun right at home and we’re here to help!

Taking a dip in the pool isn't the only fun you can have in the backyard. Try your hand at activities like water balloon pinatas, frisbee tic-tac-toe, and the giant lawn matching game. You can find what you need to DIY almost any game with just a quick stop at the dollar store. There are hundreds of fun, easy-setup activities that will keep the family active and happy. Our Summertime Backyard Games & Activities Pinterest Board compiles some of the best summer fun for the entire family! By no means has this been a typical summer but that it can inspire you to get more creative than ever.

Outdoor Movies

Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. One of the best ways to enjoy a cool summer night with your family is to have an outdoor movie night. With movie theaters closed, many people miss the fun of seeing a new movie but you can make the experience great from the comfort of your own home. Not sure where to start? Mom Advice has partnered with Walmart to create an easy DIY budget-friendly outdoor movie night. Whether you decide to pull out a couple of lawn chairs or set up some tents, the hardest thing about this is having the family agree on which movie to watch. Everyone is a sucker for a classic sing-a-long! We recommend some of the best throwbacks—The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan. If the family is leaning more towards action, grab the gang and suit up for a Disney+ Marvel movie marathon.

Watching a movie is never complete without snacks. For your next movie night, try some healthy alternatives to the traditional popcorn and pretzels with these five healthy recipes from the Food Network that kids can make, sure to satisfy everyone’s taste buds. These recipes are children-friendly so make sure they grab their aprons and join in on the fun. Take a crack at cinnamon raisin soft pretzels, taco popcorn, strawberry chocolate chip muffins, gluten-free cheesy crackers, and peanut butter balls. Everything tastes better when it’s homemade!

Glow in the Dark Bowling

The night isn’t over yet—think glow in the dark and the possibilities are endless. Just like movies, you can make bowling at home a great experience! Instructables gives you the guide on how to DIY the perfect glow in the dark bowling for indoors and outdoors. Once you’ve got everything you need, turn off the lights and put your own spin on it! It’s great for all ages and the best part is that you don’t have to rent shoes to play!

If you’re looking for some more indoor activities to help keep the kids entertained, our Culture Fix page has you covered. For children ages 4+ we’ve compiled some of PBS Kids’ best music games where they can learn about rhythm, different musical instruments, and test out their dance moves. Check out Carmen's World Orchestra where kids will have the opportunity to play music from all around the world and put on their own concert. It’s important for kids to stay active even if they’re indoor and Pinkadance is a perfect way! Kids can play freeze dance or learn new dance moves with Pinkalicious. Keeping those creative juices flowing, we have an array of different coloring pages for your little Picassos to choose from.

In case you're up for some crafting, Adventure in a Box lays out their DIY tutorial to create a puppet theatre made for royalty. With your homemade puppet theatre, not only will kids have the opportunity to help decorate and design, but they'll be able to put on fun performances of their own. Together you can reenact your favorite fairytales or make up the story as you go with sock puppets, paper-mache, or even shadow theatre. Everyone has the opportunity to get involved and there is complete creative freedom so you're sure to have a load of silly moments!

No matter which way you and your family choose to spend time together, make sure to have a blast! The possibilities are endless and summer days are long, so explore some ideas and see how much you can pack in. Whether it's cooking in the kitchen or bowling in the backyard, you're sure to make some memories.
